“So far, this looks like the same convenient pattern. Let's talk frankly about the reality of Jane's disinformation about al Qaeda: that they had the "motive, means and opportunity." A lot is being made of al Qaeda having been "driven out of Afghanistan" and metastasizing into a worldwide cancerous terror network. But none of that explains why there have been NO normal small terrorist attacks in western nations, particularly the US, between these major events.

The sporadic complex attacks that have occurred have all the markings of government driven tragedies meant to drive the public into herd-like compliance with government constrictions on liberty. True terrorist forces around the world, as in Israel, keep hitting their targeted citizenry with numerous small attacks that are cheap and easy and that foster an increasing fear about government's inability to stop them. All the big attacks do is give government an excuse to surveil its own citizens without warrants, arrest and hold people without a hearing, and start screening all passengers and baggage going into the transportation system -- a policy incompatible with rapid mass transit.

I expect a litany of predictable reactions to issue forth from London: Shock, hand wringing, counter revelations and suspicions about "foreknowledge," followed by calls for investigations (to be accomplished only by predictable establishment insiders), and finally the solution: new laws and funding to further state police power and curtail individual liberties. Passenger and luggage screening for subways and trains is already being proposed. Conveniently, this screening, as in airlines, allows government to track in detail the movements of all persons entering the system.

Above all, the phony "war on terror" must go on and naysayers must be shouted down into silence. That is the legacy of these rare attacks. They never result in more safety -- only more control.

Foreknowledge: As Reuters reported, "'We are clearly shocked but we are not surprised by what has happened,' assistant deputy commissioner of London police Brian Paddick told reporters, adding no warning had been received." Maybe for the common man or common police, but other "more important" officials were warned. The AP reported, "Just before the blasts, Scotland Yard called the security officer at the Israeli Embassy to say they had received warnings of possible attacks, the official said... Benjamin Netanyahu [Minister of Finance for Israel] had planned to attend an economic conference in a hotel over the subway stop where one of the blasts occurred, and the warning prompted him to stay in his hotel room instead, [anonymous] government officials said."

The Brits are going to want to know why Scotland Yard thought more of calling the Israeli embassy than London's police chief or the security headquarters of London's subway system.”
